Top Ten Coldest Cities

1. Vostok Station, Antarctica
The coldest place on earth is considered to be Antarctica. Only penguins and seals inhabit this place for half a year. It is also the biggest desert in the world because it has very little precipitation. The temperature can go down to -128.6^o F or -89.2°C.

2. Oymyakon, Russia
Oymyakon village is located in Eastern Siberia. Around 900 people live in this icy village. The average temperature is -96°F or -71.2°C during the winter which is nine months. Oymyakon lies in a bowl between mountains, which traps cold air and hence has such frigid temperatures.

3. Verkhoyansk, Russia
Verkhoyansk, located in the Yakutia region of Siberia, lies within the Arctic Circle. The city is the third smallest town in Russia. Its population is around 1,400. The temperature, normally, will reach -40 °C (−40 °F) and −69.8 °C (−93.6 °F) at its peak.

4. North Ice Station Greenland
Greenland is known to be the coldest place in the western hemisphere. On January 9^th,1954, a temperature of -87 °F (-66 °C) was recorded at the North ice Research Station in the middle of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

5. Snag in Yukon, Canada
On the 3^rd of February, 1947, Snag, a tiny village in Yukon, recorded the coldest temperature ever recorded in North America: -81.4°F or -63°C. This village was established during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. The village is located in a valley south of beaver creek.

6. Yakutsk, Russia
Yakutsk has a population of around 200,000 and is the capital of the Yakutia region in Siberia. In January, daily high temperatures average around -58°F (-50°C). People are warned to not wear their glasses outdoors because they freeze to your face.

7. Prospect Creek, Alaska in United States
On the 23^rd of January, 1971, a pipeline camp recorded what is considered the lowest temperature ever recorded in the United States of America: -79.8°F/ -62.1°C. Prospect Creek is located just 25 miles southeast from Bettles, Alaska.

8. Umiat, America
The average temperature of Umiat is 10.1°F, making it the one of the coldest cities in all of the United States of America. It is located 140 miles southwest of Deadhorse in the Arctic Circle. 9. Barrow, America
Barrow is one of the coldest cities in Alaska and is the closest city in America to the Antarctic Circle. The average temperature is -20.1 °C (−29.0 °F) but at its peak it can reach about -53.0 °C (−47.0 °F). Sometimes auroras appear in Barrow’s night sky.


10. International Falls, America
International Falls is situated on the Rainy River. The population is around 7,000. The average temperature is 36.4 °F (2 °C). The average low for December, January, and February is below zero. International Falls is so cold that it is promoted as the “Icebox of the nation”.
